If your son is having trouble with his learning ... then you're also hurting. Through my experience teaching Torah in the United States and my two years of Chinuch training from Ner LeElef, I understand that the problem is often a lack of interest in the subject matter, which stems from a feeling that what he is learning is abstract and not relevant to his life. My strength as a mechanech is in the bringing of the learning alive - by spicing it with anecdotes, dramatizing it with stories, and illustrating to him how the concepts underpinning the sugya really are relevant to his life. And, as far as I know, there is no such thing as an irrelevant sugya. While teaching this way, I also gently encourage him to involve his imagination in the learning, so that he takes the skill with him for the rest of his life. My approach relates both to those who learn visually as well as those who learn aurally.
